GordonLonghorns.com 10/12/2008 Longhorn News District Ten-DI News Gordon Longhorns 56 VS Gustine Tigers 6 (10/6/2008) Week Six - District Race Is On Game Recap-GUSTINE - The Gordon Longhorns handed the Gustine Tigers a 56-6 loss to open District 10 - DI play. The Horns jumped out to a 40-6 first quarter lead, scoring on each of their 5 drives in that quarter. Gordon tacked on 16 second quarter points taking the score to 56-6. The game was called at the half due to the 45 point rule. The Horns will host May at home in week seven, while Gustine will face Blanket. Photos of this game have been added to the photo gallery! Game Preview- The District 10 DI race begins this week and first up for the Horns are the 3-2 Gustine Tigers. Like Gordon, Gustine will be fresh off an open week. The Tigers fell to the Zephyr Bulldogs in the week prior by a score of 84-34. The Longhorns knocked off Abilene Christian 107-62 that same week. Gustine's other loss came at the hands of the Star Tigers 90-64 in week two. Gustine's wins were over Cranfills Gap, Morgan, and Iredell and were all over early. Gustine and Gordon share no like opponents thus far. Indirectly there is a connection between the two, although it is more interesting than conclusive. Gustine defeated Iredell 58-8, Iredell was defeated by Jonesboro 58-8, Walnut Springs downed Jonesboro 56-28, and Gordon crushed Walnut Springs 76-28. The game is scheduled for Friday October 10th at Gustine. Kickoff is at 7:30PM. Historical Viewpoint- The Gustine Tigers hold a rare series lead over Gordon 18-10. The series between these two stretches all the way back to 1960. In their first meeting that season, Gustine defeated Gordon 86-6. Gordon registered it's first win over the Tigers in 1967 with a 28-24 Bi-District win. That win was Gordon's first ever playoff victory. Gordon actually played Gustine twice in '67, the other time being early on in the season which they lost 41-37. These two teams met last year in Gordon. Gordon defeated Gustine 60-18. The Horns have won 7 of the last 8 meetings.   (9/28/2008) Record Setting Game The Longhorns set a personal single game high score record with the 107 points they put up over ACHS. The combined score of the game tied a long standing record set back in 1968 when Gordon defeated Benjamin 97-72 for a total of 169 points. The 97 points Gordon scored in that game was also the previous highest single game score for the Horns. Gordon has exceeded the 90 point mark on only two other occasions. They defeated Bjorkdale, Canada 92-24 in 1996 (mercy rule was waived for the game) and in 1971 they racked up a 91-58 win over Venus. The 2008 Longhorns also made the top 10 single game high score list with their 80-30 win over Newcastle.
