Decade-by-decade breakdown of the match up starting with the 1960ís:
It was during this decade where the rivalry really began to take shape. The decade began and ended with tight games, (1960:Gordon 12, Strawn 12),(1969:Strawn 37, Gordon 36). Both Strawn and Gordon fielded teams in the 60ís that won the regional title, which was as far as a six-man team could go at the time. Gordon won the title in 1967 led by senior quarterback Nelson Campbell. In 1968 Strawn won the regional title, a team led by Kirk Hinkson and Larry Kueck (Current Offensive Coordinator for Marshall University). Most around at the time felt that these two teams could have won the state title those years.
The first half of the 1970's Gordon won 5 and tied Strawn once(20-20) in 1972. Among those victories Gordon squeaked by (1971:20-18) and (1974:36-30). In 1976 the tides turned in favor of the Greyhounds. In 1977 the Greyhounds stepped across the rivalry boundaries and hired Gordon an alumni, first year head coach Nelson Campbell who lead his team to commanding wins over the Longhorns to finish out the decade.
In 1981 Nelson Campbell made the eight mile move back to his alma matter Gordon. In his first year at Gordon he lead the Horns past Strawn 63-21, with a team led by eventual six-man head coach Clyde Parham. In 1982 Strawn picked up another Gordon grad and former Gordon coach James Grigsby. That year Grigsbyís Strawn team, led by senior Larry Holder crushed the Horns 52-18. There were some close ones in the 1980ís: (1980:Gordon 44-30)(1985:Strawn 34-20)(1987:Tied 30-30)(1988-89:Strawn 37-32, 27-26). During the late 80ís Strawn was lead by the comeback kid spread back Mike Diaz who led his team to the last second tie in 1987, and last second wins in 88 and 89. To back Diaz up those years was a corps of six-man state champion track winners.
The 1990ís were simply dominated by the Longhorns who won the match up seven consecutive times , the longest win streak in the series, from 1991-1997, and also won in 1999. The Greyhounds won once in 1990 36-33 and in 1998 20-14. Coming into the 90s, Strawn led the series 19-14-2, this decade turned the tables on the Hounds. In the 90s Gordon wracked up an impressive 45-3 district record, 109-16-1 overall, and 2 state championships. During the decade the Horns were led by quarterbacks Jon Johnson, Jim and Joe Kostiha and Lyle Campbell. In 1998, Strawn hired yet another Gordon Alumni in Clyde Parham. In his first year he managed the first Greyhound win in 7 years.
Strawn started the decade off with a big 46-0 win versus a rebuilding returning state champion Gordon.
The Horns retuned the favor in 2001 defeating Strawn 48-0. Gordon went on to beat Strawn in 2002. In 2003,
for the District Championship between two undefeated teams, Gordon defeated Strawn 47-34. Strawn went on to claim
their first State title that year. Strawn defeated Gordon in 2004,2005, and 2006. In 2007 Gordon recovered from a 20 point deficit in the third quarter to
beat Strawn and take the district crown 64-50. The #6 Horns defeated the #2 Hounds in 2008 by a score of 60-30
in one of the highest profiled games ever.
The Longhorns took two narrow wins from Strawn in 2011 and 2012 under Head Coach Shane Mallory, who fell to the Greyhounds in his first two years at the helm.
Gordon Alum Joe Kostiha took over for Mallory in 2013 and lost to Strawn in his first year only to rebound in a decisive win in 2014.
